Well many of us knew this day would come. It was all too obvious when we had been told the new Simcity would require an always on connection via DRM. Nevertheless as always the press was ecstatic about how amazing Simcity was and how all the changes they had made had vastly improved upon the formula. Sadly this is far from the case. So far the game has been a colossal flop. As of day one almost everyone has been waiting over 2 days to even play the game at all.
EA and Maxis alike touted that DRM was the only defense they had against piracy. This is of course a terrible miscalculation. There is a much better way to combat piracy and its actually quite simple. Make an incredible game full of quality content instead of fluff. Do not add restrictive features to it such as DRM, etc. That practically invalidate your customer’s purchase and make them feel like they are only renting your game. Which in a word infuriates them!
Furthermore enough with the Day one DLC. If you want to include a special limited edition poster that goes over all the buildings and other elements in the game, director’s commentary, exclusive behind the scenes footage, etc. then wrap it all up in a ginormous skyscraper and sell it to me for $30 extra that is completely fine. In fact I have no problem with that. That’s actually something I could get behind, but charging us extra for content on day one that was obviously created alongside the full product that actually enhances the game and without it we are missing out? Sorry but that will not fly with the majority of us. Its insulting. It feels like you are in essence slapping us in the face with our own money. It is completely unethical and it does nothing but fuel the rage we have against you and your overpriced, over-hyped games!
More to the point stop destroying incredible franchises. Dragon Age, Mass effect, ect. and now Simcity? How do you justify taking these once beloved franchises and turning them into gutter trash? You tear the soul out of these games. EA you are like a blackhole almost everything you touch is torn to pieces and eventually forgotten. Lets talk about how you truly tore the heart and soul from Simcity.
Simcity used to be all about freedom. Freedom to terraform and mold the very face of the region to your liking. Freedom to choose whether you want to specialize your city or make it a hodgepodge of different ideas and industries. Freedom to layout your various zones however you see fit. Freedom to play the game OFFLINE! Need I go on?
Sadly I must so people can fully understand what you have done to simplify and limit the scope and magic of the original Simcity franchise. You have made sure that people can never again create the huge metropolises that this game used to reward careful, strategic, meticulous mayors; the pleasure of seeing and of course destroying. Marveling at the works they created and deciding the fate of the poor sim victims. Why, why would you eliminate something so dear and important to the core experience.
I am of course speaking of the tiny square city plots, surrounded by restrictive borders. That you expect us to work within the confines of. You have to be kidding me. We all wanted a bigger better Simcity and you sure marketed this one as such. However unfortunately as I have noticed has been the case with many games past you lied and deceived us. You say well the region play allows you to create a ton of cities but then you created your own roads and highways to link to them that we cannot alter. Its like every good idea you came up with you created a restrictive element to that would make the majority of us hate it. What were you honestly thinking. You were clearly only thinking about how rich you could get destroying yet another cherished franchise.
There is so much to talk about that just went horribly wrong with Simcity and it is sad that Maxis will most likely take the fall. Rather than wasting your time on this (as of now) broken game, go ahead and check out Civitas; a DRM free game inspired by Simcity and other city building games. That is being carefully designed and developed by wonderful artists, producers, etc. From some of your favorite games including Mortal Kombat, Darksiders 2, Borderlands 2, Quake 4, Section 8, F.E.A.R., and multiple IOS and mobile titles.
I’ll leave you with this chat excerpt that has gone viral. Showing exactly how EA feels about giving refunds.
